Overview
College of Chemical Engineering of North China University of Science and Technology has origins that trace back to 1958 from the Department of Chemical Engineering of Hebei Institute of Mining and Refining. In 2010, the college adopted the name of College of Chemical Engineering after decades of using the names of the Department of Chemical Engineering and the College of Chemical and Biotechnology. Also, it began to recruit undergraduate students’ bachelor degree in Coking Chemistry in 1958. After 60 years of development, there has been constant increase on the college, with larger scales and better educational levels. At present, college has six undergraduate majors, including chemical engineering and technology, applied chemistry, chemistry, environmental engineering, environmental science and energy chemical engineering, etc. In 1985, college began to recruit master’s degree students in Metallurgical Chemical Analysis with Hebei University and other institutions. In 2000, the college was granted the right to confer the second-level discipline master’s degree in Chemical Technology. In 2006, it was granted the right to confer master of Engineering in the field of chemical engineering. In 2010, it was granted the right to confer master of Engineering in the first-level discipline of Chemical Engineering and Technology. In 2018, it was granted the right to confer Master of Chemistry in the first-level discipline. The discipline of Chemical Engineering and Technology is the supporting discipline of the doctoral program and also the discipline of double first-class construction in Hebei Province. There are 1,306 undergraduate students and 96 graduate students. At the same time, the college also undertakes the teaching of physical chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, principles of chemical engineering and so on.
The Institute of chemical engineering has a strong faculty with 74 staffs, including 16 professors, 27 associate professors, 2 doctoral supervisors, 36 master tutors, 45 doctoral teachers, 15 foreign visiting teachers and 12 double qualified teachers. There are 1 national excellent teacher, 1 national model teacher, 2 provincial famous teaching teachers, 1 young and middle-aged backbone teacher, 2 provincial young top-notch talents and 6 provincial teachers in “333 Talent Project”. There are excellent instructors and other advanced representatives.
The college has 1 national characteristic specialty, 1 key discipline of Hebei Province, 1 provincial Chemical Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center, 1 provincial teaching team, 1 provincial education innovation highland, 1 provincial professional comprehensive reform pilot, 3 provincial resource sharing courses, 1 school level teaching team and 1 school level professional comprehensive reform pilot. The college has research platforms such as Hebei Coal Chemical Engineering Technology Research Center and Key Laboratory of environmental photocatalysis in Hebei Province, Tangshan Marine Resources Comprehensive Utilization Research Center and Key Laboratory of New Energy and Green Chemical Technology.
Teachers actively participate in teaching and scientific researches. In recent three years, teachers have undertaken 10 educational reform projects in and won one second prize of provincial excellent teaching achievements and one school level teaching achievement award. It has been rated as an excellent teaching unit at school level for many years. Over the past five years, College of Chemical Engineering has undertaken 18 NSFC projects, more than 40 provincial and ministerial level projects and 5 provincial and municipal scientific research awards. It also published more than 500 academic papers, including more than 302 SCI included, 36 international top journals (SCI zone 1 and 2), 14 papers highly cited by ESI and 46 national invention patents. In the fields of new coking technology and coal cleaning and utilization, advanced electrocatalytic materials, functional adsorption materials, environmental pollution control and control, a number of international advanced level achievements have been achieved, making outstanding contributions to local economic and social development.
The college adheres to the aim of educating students, and always takes undergraduate teaching as the first priority. Thus, it carries out educational reform, construction of teaching staff, construction of study style and laboratory construction, so as to continuously improve the quality of talent cultivation and comprehensive quality. In recent years, the students have hosted 54 projects of the university students’ innovation experiment program and participated in 9 projects of the national Internet plus competition. There are 4 national scholarships, 96 national inspirational scholarships, 79 outstanding graduates, 82 outstanding student cadres, 4 provincial three good students and 1 provincial excellent student cadre. The employment rate of chemical engineering graduates reached 96%, and the postgraduate entrance examination rate reached 23.2%.
In the new era, the college will take the general secretary Xi Jinping’s educational thoughts as the guidance and uphold the university’s motto of “moral education, diligence and truth”, and the college motto of “full of virtue, full of energy”. College of Chemical Engineering adheres to the principle of cultivating students with morality, taking improving quality as the core and taking discipline construction as leader. Based on that, it maintains the specialty characteristics of “coal chemical industry”, strives to improve the quality of talent cultivation and strives to achieve new leaps in talent cultivation, faculty construction, scientific research, discipline construction, and social service ability.
