Overview
The predecessor of the College of Elementary Medicine was the Department of Basic Medical Sciences of North China Coal Medical College established in 1963. After the merging of North China Coal Medical University and Hebei Polytechnic University to form Hebei United University in 2010, it was renamed as School of Basic Medical Sciences. In 2015, the university was renamed North China University of Science and Technology, and subsequently the school was renamed School of Basic Medical Sciences of North China University of Science and Technology.
College of Elementary Medicine as one of the main teaching units, undertakes the teaching tasks of the basic medical courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and international students majoring in medical sciences of the university. The school has three disciplines: Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Pathology and Pathophysiology, Pathogenic biology and Immunology, two teaching and research departments: Pharmacology and Physiology and one central laboratory. After years of construction and development, a more complete undergraduate and postgraduate training system has been formed and the discipline has obvious advantages with a provincial key development disciplines (Pathology and Pathophysiology), three provincial excellent courses (Histology and Embryology, Pathology and Pathophysiology) and one provincial excellent teaching team (Basic medical morphology teaching team).
Graduate education of the school began in 1985, training postgraduates together with Beijing Second Medical College. In 1993, Pathology and Pathophysiology was awarded the authorization for Master’s degree. Human anatomy, histology and embryology, pathogenic biology were granted the right to award master's degree in 2001 and 2003 respectively and in 2006, the school began to recruit doctoral candidates affiliated to Yanbian University. In 2011, the first-level discipline of basic medicine was added to the authorized disciplines of master’s degree.
College has a high-quality academic team with strong teaching and research ability, high educational level and reasonable structure. Among them, there are one outstanding teacher of Hebei Province, one young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions of Hebei Province, one excellent teacher of Hebei Province, eight excellent teachers in Medical Education of Hebei Province, and seven talents of Hebei Province 333 Talent Project (the third level), three model workers of Tangshan and six teachers serving as directors, executive directors or deputy directors of academic societies above provincial level.
Adhering to the mission of “serving coal industry, for the benefit of miners”, the school actively carries out scientific research. It has undertaken and completed a number of national science and technology research projects, national natural science fund projects and key projects at the provincial and ministerial level. Great achievements have been made in the study of the pathogenesis of coal worker’s pneumoconiosis, the prevention and treatment of pneumoconiosis against fibrosis, and the treatment of coal worker’s pneumoconiosis by large volume lung lavage. The school has published the first Coal Mine Pneumoconiosis Pathological Atlas, participated in the pneumoconiosis pathological diagnostic criteria (GB8783-88), with the establishment of China’s first coal workers pneumoconiosis pathological specimen bank, making outstanding contribution to the prevention and treatment of pneumoconiosis and the improvement of the health level of coal miners. The research on the pathogenesis and prevention of pneumoconiosis fibrosis has become the characteristic research direction of the school, and some of the research results have reached international advanced level.
At present the college has four undergraduate specialities: Clinical Medicine, Anesthesiology, Medical Imaging, and Laboratory Medicine. It undertakes the teaching task of basic medical courses for all medical undergraduates and international students; The first-level discipline of basic medicine is an authorized discipline for master’s degree, and is affiliated with Yanbian University to recruit doctoral candidates. The school always regards the quality of education and teaching as the lifeline of survival and development, takes the foundation as the core, takes the reform of education and teaching as the motive force, and takes the improvement of students’ innovative ability and comprehensive quality as the goal, thus the exploration and practice of the reform of education and teaching have formed the characteristics of cultivating talents with “a solid foundation and strong innovation”. Most of the graduates have become the academic leader and the academic backbone of their units, which is praised by the employers. In recent years, in the process of co-cultivating doctoral students with Yanbian University, the school has accumulated valuable experience.
College actively carries out various forms of academic exchanges and cooperation, holding regular academic activities and inviting domestic and foreign well-known experts to introduce the cutting-edge academic research and research results. Friendly relationship has been established with many scientific research institutions from United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Hungary and other countries, through which young and middle-aged backbone teachers are selected to go there for further study.
College has a central laboratory with four subdivisions of morphology, function, anatomy, and pathogenic organisms. Also, there are two experimental platforms, the basic research platform of trauma in coal mine and the research and development platform of biotechnology, playing an important role in the process of scientific research and postgraduate cultivation, and having become an important base of postgraduate cultivation and high-level research work.
