Overview
College of Humanities and law of North China University of Science and Technology was established in December 2010. It was formed by the combination of the Law Department of the former North China Coal Medical College and the College of Humanities and Law of former Hebei University of Science and Technology. The college has two undergraduate majors, Law and Social Work, among which law major includes law direction and medical and judicial direction. And it has the qualification to grant master’s degree in law.
There are 42 faculty members and 33 full-time teachers in the college of Humanities and Law, including 6 professors, 15 associate professors, 10 teachers with doctor’s degree and being doctoral candidate, 21 teachers with master’s degree and 18 with double professional titles. Among the teachers, there are 1 national model teacher, 1 provincial excellent teacher, 1 Tangshan outstanding social science expert and 1 school-level outstanding teacher.
The college has a reference room, with more than 30000 books and nearly 100 kinds of academic journals, opening to students. With a simulation court with advanced facilities and two-hundred-people capacity, the college can support students to carry out legal practice activities. In 2005, the first law clinic of Hebei Province was established under the guidance of the China Clinical Legal Education Committee to carry out the teaching of law.
In recent years, the college has focused on scientific research. Teachers of college have published more than 500 academic papers, undertaken more than 50 provincial and municipal (Department) projects, published more than 20 textbooks and monographs, including 3 national planning textbooks, and won more than 10 awards.
In terms of promoting the reform of education and teaching and forming self-characteristics, the college played an active role in the construction and improvement of curriculum system and teaching content reflecting the new talent training objectives and training mode and then formed a teaching system combining classroom teaching, simulated court, academic research and judicial society practice. Among which, health law and civil law are excellent courses at school level.
According to the strong practicality of law and social work, the college attaches importance to the development of practical teaching activities as an important part of the talent training program. At present, we have established 27 practice bases with judicial organs at all levels, law firms and arbitration institutions, and employed numbers judges and lawyers with practical experience as part-time professors of our college. At the same time, by holding simulated court, debate contest, sending law to the countryside, legal publicity day, watching trial and other activities, students’ logical thinking ability and practical operation ability are improved, and more training opportunities are created for students. In every holiday, the college provides students with various internship opportunities to guide students to apply their knowledge to social practice. At present, there are more than 400 students majoring in law and more than 200 students majoring in social work. The annual postgraduate entrance examination rate is about 20%, and the employment rate of law majors is among the best in our university.
Relying on the advantages in medicine and engineering of the university, the college has explored a new way to cultivate interdisciplinary talents. In 2004, the college offered law major in medical and judicial direction aiming to train medical professionals who are proficient in legal affairs and adapt to the new situation of medical law to cater for the new situation of healthy law construction of China. Students majoring in this major not only study the law courses prescribed by the Ministry of Education, but also study basic medicine and clinical medicine courses, and participate in clinical probation, thus opening up a new field of legal education. In 2005, we enrolled postgraduate students in Social Medicine and Health Care Management (medical and judicial direction).
