Overview
Founded in 2011, College of Life Sciences currently offers two undergraduate majors —Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. As a master’s training and degree-granting unit, the college has three master’s programs which are Medical Bioinformatics, Biomolenomics and Pathogenic Biology (co-construction). Three scientific research institutes which are Genomics and Computational Biology Center, Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics are also included in it. What’s more, College of Life Sciences also consists of five department-level units, that is, Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Biological Engineering, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Bioinformatics and Teaching and Experimental Center. Furthermore, the Teaching and Experimental Center is the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Hebei Province. And “Cell Biology” is rated as excellent course in the province.
The college now has 63 staff, 45 full-time teachers—of whom 53% are PhDs, 10 professors, 20 associate professors and 21 master supervisors. Teachers in this college come from prestigious universities such as the University of California, Berkeley, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Peking University, Tsinghua University. What’s more, 12 teachers have gone to study abroad. The college has a large number of talents. It has 1 scholar of the Ministry of Education Talent Support Program, 1 scholar of the Provincial Hundred Talents Program, 2 Outstanding Provincial Experts, 1 Provincial Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker, 2 Provincial Outstanding Youth Fund Winners, 4 scholars of “333 Talent Project” of Hebei Province. Aiming at the international frontier, the college has carried out in-depth and high-level scientific research, with a total of more than 12 million yuan in scientific research funds in the past three years. The college undertakes 18 national-level scientific research projects and 33 provincial level scientific research projects. The faculties and students of the college have published more than 500 academic papers, many of which have been published in top international journals such as Science, Nature, Nature-Genetics, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Genome Research. The college has won 22 scientific researches and teaching achievements, and its research results have been cited more than 6000 times. Among them, 10 papers ranked 1% of the world’s highest cited papers in related disciplines, and two of them ranked 1/1000, which have a great influence on both Hebei Province and the world.
As for talent training, the college adheres to the teaching philosophy of “emphasizing characteristics, focusing on practice, and cultivating continuous independent learning ability and innovative spirit”. It also strengthens the joint training of schools and enterprises and implements the Undergraduate Tutorial System. What’s more, the college also supports students to develop science research and guides students to participate in scientific research projects and competitions such as the “College Students Innovative Experimental Program” and the National College Students Ocean Knowledge Competition on the basis of the strong scientific research strength of teachers. Moreover, college has established long-term teaching cooperation relationships with well-known domestic research units such as Beijing Academy of Military Medical Sciences and Beijing Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A large number of outstanding students have emerged in the college. More than 30 among them have won national scholarships and honored as provincial Triple-A students and so on. They have published more than 30 academic papers as the first author. In addition, many students received scholarships from prestigious foreign universities and went abroad for further study. In addition, the average employment rate of graduates in the past three years is 98%.
Facing the new development opportunities, the college will continue to improve its innovation and self-construction and strive to achieve its goal of becoming a well-known, first-class high-level research and teaching college in the province.
Biotechnology
This major subdivides disciplines and carries out special training. Students receive general education in the first grade of postgraduate, and then can apply for one of the two research directions: Biomedical Technology and Biochemical Technology. In order to continue to cultivate talents, college has three master’s degree programs in Medical Bioinformatics, Biomolecular Omics, and Pathogenic Biology.
Training objectives: Cultivate application-oriented senior professionals who have good ethics, solid theoretical knowledge of biotechnology and strong practical innovation ability. Furthermore, they are able to engage in biotechnology-related applied research, technology development, and management in fields such as medicine, chemical industry, environmental protection, agriculture, gardening and so on.
Main courses: General Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, etc. Relevant main courses are set up according to different directions. To be more specific, Microbiological Engineering, Chemical Engineering Principles, Enzyme Engineering, Fermentation Engineering Equipment, Biochemical Engineering and so on are set up in the direction of Biochemical Technology. Human Physiology, Developmental Biology, Laboratory Zoology, Laboratory Diagnostics, Immunology and so on are set up in the direction of Biomedical Sciences. Bioinformatics Software Methods, Molecular Evolution Analysis, Program Design and Algorithms, Bioinformatics Mathematical Methods, Linear Algebra and Probability Theory and so on are set up in the direction of Bioinformatics.

Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics, established in 2016, is a special major of the college, and it is connected with its undergraduate major. The college has two master’s degree programs in Medical Bioinformatics and Biomolecular Omics.
Training objectives: Cultivate application-oriented senior professionals who have good ethics, solid theoretical knowledge of biotechnology, strong data analysis capabilities, innovative spirit and social responsibility, and who are also adaptable to meet the development needs in the field of Bioinformatics. Graduates can engage in teaching, scientific research, application development and so on in the education industry, scientific research institutes, and Bioinformatics-related industries, or get further study for master’s and erudite degrees.
